    The Importance of Shared Experiences

“This won’t always be here,” the man, voice cracking, whispered to – presumably – his grandson.

I happened to be walking past. Already, thousands of people had gathered nearby to watch the annual Christmas Tree lighting.

The man stared into the distance. I imagined him envisioning his childhood: a throng of children – like his grandson – dashing and weaving and dodging about through the crowd, snow gently drifting through the air.

A memory. A memory of holiday lights belonging to a long forgotten era.

I should have stayed and listened longer. But the Christmas Tree lighting countdown would begin shortly, and I still had to work my way through the crowd (to actually light the tree!)…

Pushing through their bodies, I felt a sort of interconnectedness: not physically, but mentally. And then I saw the reason they were all here.

They weren’t here for holiday lights, the technology, or even the tree lighting. All the time and effort, from countless volunteers, served only one singular purpose.

The bond of a shared experience.

People were here to become closer to their friends, their family, their community. Not physically. But through the shared experience of a memory.

Thousands of people for the next day, the next month, and perhaps even – like the old man I had walked past – the next many years, would go on to reminisce, comment, and post to one another about their version of a shared memory.

Thousands of people interconnected over space and time…

    That’s why they were here.

    Fox6 News Visits!

So, it’s 9am and I get an unknown call. It’s Christine, a reporter from Fox6 News. And she’s looking to come out and do an interview with the East Troy Lights crew… immediately!

Thank you to FOX6 News Milwaukee for covering our behind-the-scenes work as we race the clock to save East Troy Lights before Santa’s arrival on Dec. 6.

We are getting closer but after rebuilding major displays, our crew is still pushing hard to get every light shining by Saturday!

    Adversity Creates Community

Picture this: 50+ mph gusts and a 95% completed East Troy Holiday Lights tunnel. You can imagine what happened next. Actually, you don’t have to imagine – we have video!

We collectively felt a heart-sinking, “how are we going to come back from this?” moment.

We spent weeks building it with a dedicated crew of volunteers – countless hours, freezing fingers, problem-solving, teamwork – and in seconds, the wind undid it all. For a minute, it felt hopeless.

    But then something amazing happened.

    The community showed up.

That’s the real magic of the East Troy Lights!

Now we’re rebuilding, resetting, and trying to come back brighter than ever. There’s still lots to do (and repair!) as we race toward Santa’s arrival on Saturday, but we’re not giving up.

    Scavenger Games 2025!

For weeks, the crew has worked tirelessly, preparing puzzles, gameplay & spooktacular rooms.

All for a crazy town takeover!

Although, I will say some of the rooms turned out pretty fantastic!
